Preppers, also known as survivalists, are a growing segment of the population who are regularly preparing for emergencies. These emergencies could include anything from natural disasters, like earthquakes or floods,to political and social disruptions on a local or international scale. Preppers work towards building a stock pile of necessary items, like non perishable foods, water, first aid, survival gear, and personal hygiene products. Survivalists are often training in self defence, building shelter, and first aid so that they can survive a catastrophic event.
I am not saying that you need to start digging a bomb shelter in your backyard and boarding up all the windows, but it is wise to have a plan in place in case there is an emergency situation and you need to stay home to be safe. With some simple strategies and planning, you can ensure your family stays secure and healthy.
Get Started With the Basics
Here is what you can do now to prepare for 72 hours in an emergency;
- Water – you will need 4 litres (1 gallon) of water per person per day
- Flashlight and battery powered radio, and don’t forget the batteries!
- Non-Perishable foods, including foods for babies and pets
- Can opener
- Hand Sanitizer
- First aid kit
- Pocket Knife
- Blankets and thermal blankets
- Medications and personal hygiene products
- Toilet paper!
- Change of clothes
- Out door clothes
- Cash and credit cards
- List of emergency contacts
Each person in the household should have their own duffel bag with these items stored in a safe, dry place that is easy to access. Items should be checked every 6 months or so to ensure that the food, water and medications are not expired. This kit will work well if you need to stay in your home, or evacuate the area and ensure you have what you need to get through the next 72 hours.
